By the mid-20th century, the demand for personalised industrial plates, identification tags, medical jewellery, and commercial awards skyrocketed. Manual hand engraving simply could not keep pace with volume demands. The solution arrived in the form of the mechanical pantograph.


Operating on geometric principles of scaling and linkage bars, a pantograph allowed an operator to trace a master template (or type layout) with a stylus, while a mechanical arm scaled down the movement to a high-speed rotating spindle or a diamond-tipped cutter.
